The plot of Cast Away begins when FedEX executive Chuck Noland leaves his girlfriend Kelly to go on a "brief" airborne business delivery trip just before Christmas. His plane crashes and he becomes the sole survivor stranded on a deserted island. He is at first filled with hope, but then begins to learn the conditions he will be living in for the next four years and realizes there is no chance of rescue. He finds a volleyball among some of the washed up FedEX packages which he had sorted at first then decided it vital for life that he open them. He turns the volleyball into his friend and names it Wilson. Four years later after giving up any hope of rescue and attempting suicide, Chuck is still living on the supplies he had from day one and perfecting tactics to help him survive, such as building fire, catching fish, keeping track of the months, and even taking care of his dental problems. He has his friend Wilson and a picture of Kelly that have helped him pull through the past four years. One day a plastic sheet floats on to shore and Chuck sets sail on a wooden raft using it as a sail to get over the waves surrounding the deserted island.
Review
At first I was hesitant to see Cast Away because I had heard that it was going to be a boring but deep movie, one of those movies where words aren't necessary. I had a negative attitude going into the movie, but after I saw it my opinion had totally changed. Not being a huge Tom Hanks fan I was one person looking for all the mistakes, however this movie had few errors. Tom Hanks did an extraordinary job acting as the sole survivor on a totally deserted island, learning one natural lesson at a time. Helen Hunt, Chuck's girlfriend did a good job too, but didn't have as much of an impact on me as Tom Hanks' acting did. His acting actually allowed me to happily neglect the lack of words for approximately half an hour of the movie. Overall this was an excellent movie and I strongly feel that Tom Hanks did a great job at his character and deserves a lot of credit for this excellent film.
